Use of fuzzy set theory for consideration of storage non-specificity in stochastic dynamic programming for reservoir operation
By: Suharyanto and Ian C. Goulter
Abstract
Applications of dynamic programming in reservoir operation and management generally require the reservoir storage to be a state variable and in that context require the reservoir storage to discretised. While the evaluation of the optimisation function is performed at specified grid points within the discretised storage intervals, usually the mid-point of each interval, actual operation of the reservoir occurs in an environment in which the storage volume rarely actually falls at that mid point. In this paper, a more realistic approach to assessing the implications of the actual storage occurring at any point within the storage class interval and the influence of storage intervals or classes adjacent to the storage interval in which the actual storage falls through application of fuzzy set and its associated concept of membership functions within a stochastic dynamic programming framework is proposed. The proposed approach is demonstrated by application to the Fairbairn reservoir in Emerald, Central Queensland, Australia.
